My Camaro is dead at the moment, can start it (just) but it rocks like hell and smells richer than Bill Gates, problem is I don't have the garage/time to look at her and need someone in the Worcester area that can bring her back to life. Anyone interested??

IF it is a carb model then it sounds like its over-fueling.
Look down the venturi (carefully) and see if you can spot fuel droplets falling. My guess would be needle seats................

Thanks for replying guys,
It's a '78 350 small block, with an Edlebrock carb.
Getting a lot of smoke out of the right side exhaust but not the left, and the engine sounds laboured. Doesn't sound like all cylinders are firing as it's not got its usual rhythm.

Yeah, do you think it's wise taking it to the Chevvy service center?

does your edelbrock have a choke?
electric or manual?
is it working or jammed
OR
they can occasionally get a stuck needle valve...
take off the lid and check the needle jet
and the rods and springs under the little 8 shaped covers
need a torx of correct size or an allan key and some luck...

It's got an electric choke, the last time I ran it out it didn't seem to be wanting to drop to the lower rev's and I had to open the hood and flick it down manually. How can I check if its jammed??

Take off air filter
choke is flap in the primary bore and has a black electronic choke module next to it
the flap over the secondaries if you have one is weight or spring loaded just leave that alone works on vaccum
switch on igntion
let it sit for a bit
see if the electric choke bit gets warm and the plate starts to droop
takes about 5-10 minutes
if it doesn't the leccy choke actuator is burned out
(this happens when it gets its supply from a circuit that is not protected from the flyback pulses in the igntion system)
if its not working properly
take off its wire and insulate it and tie it back
undo the three screws around the electronic choke actuator thing
turn its body round so that the flap falls open to the vertical
do up the screws again
and leave it like that
start the car by stamping the peddle 3-4 times
try to start
chugga chugga chugga
rest
stamp 1 more time and keep it open a snatch and it will go...
hold small revs till it idles

OK so I finally managed to get some time to check out the carb and I have the following issues/questions.
I noticed that fuel is shooting out of the metering rod chamber. I've taken the top off and checked float heights and valves and they all seem to be ok. The gasket between the top and bottom half of the carb has torn in the middlle around where the air filter screw goes through.
Can I get replacement gaskets from anywhere in the UK? Is this likely to be the reason why the fuel is leaking or is this another symptom? What is the best way to check the fuel pressure from the fuel pump? And where can I find the model number on the carb?

All fixed! ... Managed to get a replacement gasket online, stripped the carb back and emptied fuel lines. Put it all back together and she started up like a dream!
