If not, can the box be reconditioned?

Instructions are in the workshop manual Neil. If you don't have them PM me and I will send you a copy of that bit.

the manual mentions disconnecting the linkage to check for backlash.
what is the backlash, is it slop?
Can I just screw the adjuster down until the play stops (if it will stop)?

Err no.
Backlash is free play in one direction. I think on a power steering car you adjust it with the engine running? If you have the manual it should have all the adjustments in there.

Here are some scans of the bits you need to read and understand. I would check the valve body adjustment too if I were you so I included that.
You have to be absolutely sure the steering is in the center of its travel when you do these adjustments. If the steering wheel is not straight in this position adjust it with the tie rods and then get the tracking re-set.
If you drive around without the steering centered correctly the car will seem to have more slop in the steering and will wander a bit on the road.

I did write that as "tongue in cheek" to initiate comment Dave
just looking to see if I can improve on things - I think the play as it stands will be a future MOT failure, so need to sort it out.
