Starter motor / header conundrum

Been working on Ivans Chally RT SE, usual story starter motor works occasionally so have gone the mini hi torque starter route.
Released the header, dropped out the old starter, hey hey, were half way there.
Offered up new starter and would you believe the starter motor now fouls the header which cant be bolted back in place - thus defeating the whole mini starter thing.
We might be able to shave a little of the starter, but not much.

Has anyone else come across this problem? Is there an easy fix?

Dreading that the same thing will happen to mine tomorrow!

thanks Bilko, hadnt seen that one. The starter motor we have is the same type as I put on my Charger which didnt have a problem with header clearence, but did have Daves block clearence probs!
Tell you what though, m beginning to thourghly hate headers!

Yes, I had the same problem.

The way forward was to apply a little weight to the offending runner from the header with the aid of a hammer, then wrap heat resistand cloth round the runner at the starter and wire it in place.

We aint talking gorilla motors here but some slight adjustment is required.

Fitted my ministarter as per that thread yesterday. I had the gearbox out so it went in alright. The rear corner of the ministarter is nigh on touching the header. Not best pleased......

Ah! Thats exactly were its catching on the RT SE Chally, thought about filing a bit off, but there is only so far you can go.
Later this yaer the 440 motor is coming out and new headers will be fitted, so I think its best to put old starter back now and put up with the occasional prob, and fit mini starter and new headers to the motor before it all goes back in the car.

The T/A one was dead easy in comparison, no modding and loads of room.

Well I'm leaving mine in and transferring it (if it still works  ) to the big block later.

Mine clears the block and headers by a country mile well a few cm dont have to remove headers or any part of the steering to get in or out :)

BUT!! I looked at the last thread! These things are all over the place re. size and design!

Mine came from Geoff Hauser... It is tiny and is light. It went in easy with NO clearance problems, I think it cost around ?100, 3 years ago. If I remember, it is aprox. 3HP.

Sounds like there are a few crappy ons out there.

Both starters being fitted to the RT/SE and the T/A are proform units from hausers. One went very well, the other dosent want to know, Im sure the different header designs have a lot to answer for! I hate headers!

You will have a problem if they are hedman headers,
but absolutely no prob, with Hooker comps or super comps. and Geofs Ministarters are Proforms, excellent.
Apart from the dreaded connection posts so close to the block, loads of insulation needed.

Mine went in a treat on the Dart without removing the headers and once on there's bags of room.

Kev, if you get a set of those nice 'Pacemaker' headers for RHD mopar small blocks there will be no starter clearance issues at all. Have a look at mine if you like, I can get a full sized starter in without removing the header first. I can't say the same for the other side though! That is a real pain!
