Gearbox trouble!

The charger is losing drive for some reason much like a slipping clutch on a manual box.
First time I noticed a problem was after a 45mile trip when I was waiting at some lights. I gave it some gas and there was no drive for about a second and then it jolted a bit and drove away normally. I had been stuck in traffic for upto 30 mins with the engine running all the time about 20 miles earlier but didn't have any problems til I was almost home.

A few days later I went for a drive and the box was making a whirring sound on accelleration and shifting quite hard and later then usual. After about five miles it occasionaly lost drive for a split second.

A week later I go for a drive and get the same noise and again after about five miles it begins to lose drive but this time alot worse and I didn't think it would get me home but thankfully it made it with a lot of revs and not much speed.

My drive is quite a steep incline and the car managed to get up on the drive with the speed I had built up on the approach. I switched the engine off and went indoors for less than five minutes and then went back to the car and started it up to put it away and it drove up the drive with no problem at all :?

I've checked the fluid level with engine running and in neutral after running through the gears and its just a fraction over the max when hot. I'm also using dexron III

Anyone had a similar problem before? Gearbags are not really my specialty so I'm at a loss on this one.

Any info appreciated.
Cheers!

383ci and 727box by the way.

Dex3 can be used in dex2 and dex3 boxes. Dex2 can't be used in a dex3 box.

Not sure if its 100% correct but the car did drive prefect for a couple hundred miles and this problem reared its head fairly quickly. Seems to get worse as the temp rises.

It might be slipping clutch - like on an auto :)

What colour is the fluid in the box? Nice red colour or a horrible dark grey blackish smelly stuff?

Nice red colour Clive. It's fresh oil but the old stuff was nice and red as well.

the most obvious thing to check is the oil level, first symptom is usally delay when engaging a gear, particularly when cold.

Sounds terminal to me I'm afraid, even if the fluid is red and doesn't smell burnt, if the fluid up to the max and you are loseing drive or getting noises, it's not a good sign. You could try pulling the pan to see if theres a lot of debris in there, if not try adjusting the bands, if that doesn't do it then it's rebuild time I'm afraid

Or! do you have an after market cooler mounted in front?
this could cause a problem, if the fluid isnt draining back to the Trans quick enough.
Had this problem on a mates car who mounted the cooler with the hose connections pointing up......AND didnt add any more fluid so two things really

I think you're probably right Blue. Any idea on how much a rebuild might cost?

No aftermarket cooler ALLKILLER every thing is stock except for elec' ignition.

Thanks for posting Adrian

It looks more and more like a rebuild is the only answer especially as yours had the same symptons. When I got mine home and stopped on the drive there was some smoke aswell so I think I was lucky to get home.

Looks like I better start doing some more overtime!
