Just having a sniff around and this fully rebuilt A12 Road Runner, which is restored around a "rust free shell" features this fender tag
Another really straight looking Runner with this VIN number in the screen RM21H8G233002 features this tag... now is it me or would your antennae be twitching?

The Vin tag.the Dash, bits on the bodywork and the build sheet Engine no should all match for them to be real?
These are clones then that they have just found an old tag fro a real car then but trying to pass them off as the real thing.
OR none of it amtches and they are calling them an A12? should A12 be on the Tags shown? have you decoded them?

Looks like the wrong format (not a '69) - hard to read.
I can PM you what a proper A12 tag looks like - I think I still have a picture of my old 'Runner one..

Thanks Pete, the tag looks like it could be a proper M code, but it's indistinct, and it can't be anything to do with that shell...and if I'm not wrong the other tag from the blue Road Runner isn't even from the same car!
It's a minefield out there for anyone looking for a real thing, that doesn't know what his onions that's for sure.

Ivor, That's definitely not an A12 tag, or anything like it.
That's just a bog standard '69 383 runner tag.
I can't see anything wrong with the blue 68 tag though.
Bear in mind 68 tag's didn't have the VIN number, they had the shipping order number instead (can't think why?).

Thanks Jim, I thought the "A12" tag was wrong, particularly as it didn't have A12 on it!
Sorry, my mistake on the '68 tag, I really thought they had the vin number on!
Nevertheless, it just goes to show, if you are not careful you can still blow 80 grand on a wrong 'un!
As for the build sheets Dave, well, I don't think I'll go anywhere near those!

I've seen several cars here in the UK with wrong fender tags.
I have also seen some with the wrong VIN tag.
The wrong fender tag is to me the same as no fender tag.
The wrong VIN tag though is a criminal offence.
I wouldn't like to be the one to tell the owner.

If you look carefully you will see that some of those build sheets have fender tags with them too.
But even if you just have the build sheet you can get "replacement" fender tags made.

I have seen this twice I can remember and in both cases it was when an owner has at some time replaced the dashpad and as far as I could tell at least one was done in ignorance rather than trying to pull one over on someone.
The other one was more complicated though. The pad had been changed and then the next owner tried to make the car match the VIN when he realised it would be worth more. So even though he didn't change the VIN himself he knew fine well he was misrepresenting the car when he sold it to the next person who was a bit upset when I worked out what had happened.

As you are well aware Dave, there is the Vin tag to produce, plus all the body stampings (which can be faked, but just as easily proved to be fake) and on the high dollar vehicles like six pack/barrel and Hemi cars all those unique parts to source...I think it's probably easier and cheaper to buy the real thing!
