McLaren Employee Motor Show 2013

Got the call a few weeks ago from Mike Jones, asking whether we’d like to bring either or both of our cars to this years’ McLaren Employee Motor Show, to be held on Aug 17th. At the time, I had a prior engagement (open day at son’s new college) and Stu was away on hols that week, so unfortunately had to decline :(
But thankfully the open day got rearranged so that freed me & the folks up so we could take Mike up on his kind offer :)

Normally he has umpteen cars to choose from but this year a combination of holidays and cars being not quite ready, meant it was just down to me and Allkiller Steve to fly the Mopar flag. Well, it should have been 2 of us but Steve had a puncture on the way so didn’t make it :(

With both our cars up’n’running (just about :? ), and the wife in-tow, I chose to take the Satty as it’s a bit quieter than the dodge  plus we took the dodge there last time we went 2 years ago.

On that last visit, they had a ‘no cameras’ rule once inside the Technical Centre, but this year, they relaxed that rule so we were allowed to take pics of whatever was on view, from the concourse area. And they seemed to have a fair bit more on show this time, too. From Bruce McLaren’s first race car the Austin 7 pictured (see photobucket link below) right up to Lewis Hamilton’s F1 car from a year or two ago (sorry, don’t remember what the info board said! )

Outside the Tech Centre, in the car parks there was the usual eclectic mix of race and classic cars and bikes. No road-legal beds or sofas this time, but Edd China was there with the Lambo that they have recently completed for the new Wheeler Dealers series, starting on Sept 17th.

We also looked in on the Wall Of Death, something I’d never been into, although it’s been at a few events we’ve been to over the last few years. Well worth the effort too. Not that there was any effort tho. And it was free too! Amazing what they can do with those old Indian bikes and that lil’old single seater :notworthy:

Anyhoo, enough waffle. Thanks again to Mike for the invite. Expecting one next year might be pushing my luck, but if the cars are available that he’s got in mind, it should be an impressive line-up of Mopars 8-)

I slimmed the pics I took down to these 145 on photobucket http://s1236.photobucket.com/user/rob44 ... how%202013

But have included a few here if you cant be arsed with links…

There’s also a nice write up and some cool pics here http://www.speedhunters.com/2013/08/mcl ... uto-union/

I could be biased tho, as the writer chose to include a couple of pics of the Sport Satellite in his article :D

Yes Stu, the old(ish) rally cars were one of the highlights for me 8-)

The 6R4 tho, is a replica and has a Honda Civic engine  10/10 for effort tho :)

I agree Dave  I think most people weer asking that question too. I heard the owner saying to someone that there's video on YouTube, but I havent looked for it yet. Prob just a video of him trying to get his leg over. So to speak :?

They had a one of those new McLarens inside, behind glass on a turntable, in the showroom. I tried to get a decent pic or two of that one but struggled for ages cos of the reflections on the glass. Then I saw that one outside. #-o

Tis a beut tho =P~ The rear spoiler assembly alone must cost a fair few grand....

that’s interesting about the 6R4, I wonder just how far the guy went to replicate it, itself only in vague looks resembled a standard Metro and only shared 21 original Metro parts, most of the body was GRP, the roof was aluminium, only the doors were steel, so if he’s used an all steel Metro body and applied a 'body kit' it’ll be closer to the original than the Williams Engineering version, interesting engine choice too, infinitely more reliable but won’t quite sound as good as the V6, was it 4 wheel drive do you know??

Even completely ignoring the cars inside, that is one of the best selections of cars I have seen in ages. Love the Rally Cars and the blue AC is gorgeous.
Great pics Rob, thank you.

Well, kind of Pete :?

It worked fine that weekend but when Stu came back from hols a week later the ECU had died. Again. That was before you kindly lent us you race one to get it going again. I've just ordered one of those Rev-n-ator thingumys, so we'll see how that one goes, when it arrives.

You out tonite, at the Three Horseshoes? We can bore you with an update then ;)
