Torqueflite filler tube

Whilst the cars up on stilts I thought I'd best ask a question I should have asked a long time ago.

The filler tube on my 727 trans box moves about like a cockerel in a sockerel and thus weeps a bit. It's also bent out of shape so I need a replacement and I'm not sure where to get one.

My main question is, can it be replaced in situ or is it a box out job?

The car is an 71 A body with a 340 SB motor, any advice and words of wisdom please will be very much appreciated :thumbright:

Thanks, James :)

It's knackered James.
Best thing to do is give the car to me as a " project " !!!
:D :D :D

Ahh mate, sorry I can't do that now. We made friends today, I fitted a new front brake cylinder and pipe work and it all went really well. I think she loves me after all   :love10:

Mind you I've got the other side to do yet so classic car repair syndrome could still kick in :banghead: :violent1:

Sorry James.
Sometimes my insane jealousy of other members cars rears its ugly head !!!
Brooklands has a lot to answer for !!!

Good luck with your fettling and hope to have another dribble over it this year

Filler tube has a tab with a bolt hole, a bolt goes through this and into the bell housing of the gearbox. Undo that one bolt and pull the dipstick filler out.

There is a rubber o ring in it normally.

You may be able to re round the tube and put and new o ring on or just buy a new one.

It's a simple enough job, one spanner

Or two if I'm included ;) Cheers vader, I'll now investigate with that info. Just needed to be sure I wasn't going to try doing something in the wrong order :thumbright:

Am I right in thinking that the stationary fluid level is below the entry point into the trans box of the filler/dipstick tube?

If the car has been standing for a while, the convertor can drain down and therefore the fluid could actually be up the dipstick...

When checking the fluid, the engine has got to be running and transmission oil should be warm.
Shift through all the gears and then check in "N".....

Cheers Pete, that explains the non leak period during the frequent summer runs vs the drip drip during pooey weather season.

As we know it was a slant six car and the 340 was likely "rushed in" most of the little brackets etc that hold pipes and the like in position had not been finished or tidied up.

Due to the unorthodox shape of the filler tube it doesn't quite line up with the upper bracket that should hold it, it's all there just not finished (as I'm still finding out  )

Just jack the car up on the passenger side to shift the fluid away fromthe dipstick tube and one bolt to undo and the pull it out and replace the o-ring.
If you want to know the size of the o-ring let me know and I'll measure one so you can buy a new one before you start the job.

Like the guys say, James, easy job. I had the same issue with my old Dart. It is imoortant to find away of bolting the tube tight so it can't move and that lets the 'O' ring do its job.

Cheers as ever guys :thumbright:

I've got the traditional box of various new O rings but it would be handy to have a heads up on size Anton if poss.

Thanks awfully :)

Some of the after market dip sticks have a much beefier mount that stops it moving

Mancini sell a nice locking dipstick & tube, they fit and seal well, I've used them a few times.
