trunk moulding trim clips

I feel dumb asking this question, but I'm about to re-install the trunk edge trim and I can't work out how the plastic trim clips are supposed to fit... it looks like the longer stem of the clip should face outwards and inside the trim piece, but it seems too long... is it supposed to push through somehow? Help!
