It is often a problem making the rear indicators of our old Mopars UK legal. It can be easy on some cars to convert the back-up lights into indicators. But it’s not a good solution, particularly on most B body cars and Challengers.

Here’s a good solution from Bright Light Customs on a 69 Road Runner. The yellow LED panel fits inside the lamp and is bright enough to shine yellow through the red lens. It looks nice, works well, you get to keep your back-up lights, and it’s fully UK legal.

i'm doing something like that, but i have a bit more space.

These look great, would be perfect for keeping a 70 Challenger looking original but also leagl.
Ive just put LEDS in the side markers on the Challenger at the front.
£10 for two strips off ebay, a bit of soldering and I now have orange indicator side repeaters and side markers which are better than the old bulbs.

It can be done much neater than that these days. You can buy strips of bright LEDs on a roll and be very inventive about how you mount them in the red lens.

Looks like a good solution for us on the Sport Satellite too Jim, thanks We currently use the reversing lights as indicators, but it would be handy to get them back as reversing lights!

Scuse my ignorance but is that the original wiring going to the LEDs, that used to go to the bulb holder?

Think I would try a thin run of LEDs around three sides of the lens so that the brake light is not covered so much.

This could be the solution to arrange of problems. I remember the hassles I had trying to remove rusted in, non functioning bulb holders from the inside of my rear lights.
Could just wire in a strip of red led's now!

Thanks, yes I spose that could work, but if they're only held on with sticky pads (as they appear to be in Jim's pics), you could experiment a bit with different patterns to see what's best....

They are sticky on the reverse side so I would probably fab a bit of plate or plastic to mount them on and hold them securely. Some modern cars only have a thin run of LEDs for their rear turn signals so they must be legal.

I have tried a few amber LED strips inside my white lens but it was not bright enough during the sunny days.

Had to go back to changing reverse to amber for indicator.

I love a try a bright amber LED strip, haven't found one yet.

Used the original wiring and soldered connections to it. They are sticky on the back and shine out to the side not the top. I stuck them around the perimieter of the side marker light and they still show ornage through the orange lens.

You can also cut them into, two and solder connections to the other end. Bit fiddly but it works fine and zero current draw so you dont need to worry about uprating the flasher unit to run extra bulbs.

Without any current draw the stock type flasher units will not work.

I had to keep a couple of "real" bulbs in the turn signal circuit to keep mine flashing.
