Removing front brake drums

Struggling like anything to get a front drum of this 69 Fury today, ended up taking the hub off with it, then knocking the studs back a bit with a big hammer, then whacking the hub back through the drum. (With the aid of 'Latil') It is the tightest thing i have ever seen. What the heck is that all about? I mean, they're meant to come off the hubs.... aren't they? The main thing holding them on was the sort of raised bits of the wheel stud shanks.

Nope  the drum and the hub are one piece. to take the drum off you undo the centre nut and pull it with the bearings.

Check you have not distorted the drum face pounding it off, seen it many times and the brakes will shudder if you have.

If (having taken off the drums the correct way) you take a little out of the holes the studs go through, they will come out in the normal fashion next time.

Trouble with the Chrysler way of doing them (along with some '80s BL drums funilly enough) is that even if the bearing etc is ok, you still have to replace the bearing seals to be sure that they're going to be ok in the future :?

I used to run one of those high quality Mahindra jeeps. Same set up as a Landrover at the front but with the added bonus of the drum/hub all in one bit. Absolute nightmare , Indian made Dana axles. Dana design Indian quality :( Add in Fiat electrics also made in India

aaah.

Well, gawd knows why they didnt just cast the whole thing in one piece like they did with the disc brakes.

Strange thing is, the drums came of my convertible just like a normal car.. perhaps someone had ground the stud holes bigger , or the studs thinner at some point.

I have never felt the need to change any oil seals on front drums before?

the studs pass through the hub and drum and are then swaged over to retain the drum . very hard to separate the two & retain the drum in useable condition.

Ooh, that made me wince when I read that!

Blimey Will, you must have given it a right mullering to get the drum off without a press...or did you fire up the torch! :D

I think you'd better run the clock over that drum, just to be on the safe side.

Fair enough, though certainly with the BL and FWD Mopar drums not changing the seals will see the bearings get full of brake dust ... not good! Obviously if they're nearly new its not going to be a problem ;)

Dont worry Wil,,i did exactly the same thing m8,except i was banging away behind the drum to get one off,and crack a little off the drumm, but the garage man said this wont bother the driving or MOT,with the cracked bit,(Fingers Crossed:).
So your not alone m8,except ya can excpect it from me as i dont know much about cars, hehehehehe.
