My daughter is trying to narrow down which uni to go for. There's 15 that run the course she wants to do (Product design) but neither she nor we have any idea which uni's are good/ bad or which locations are cool/ uncool for an 18 year old to live, study and party...
I'll be taking Daisy to as many open days as possible but obviously we ain't gonna get around 15!!
Any info good and bad gratefully received

Depends how independent she wants to be, if she wants to be close to home then Manchester makes sense as she can come back at weekends

I'd avoid Lomdon, nothing wrong with the place itself but her social life will be more costly.

Try these league tables. The Guardian one includes rating based on student experience, I think the Times one prefers to look at the publishing record of the university. Students should always ask prospective Uni's what their students go on to do ie progression data.
If they don't know, don't apply!
Also, as you know, she has to reduce that list to 5 options. Make sure she visits as she will be there for 3 years min.

been to a few open days recently with my daughter

Manchester, of course I am biased, is the only one on your list that i have been to, allow a full day for your visit here, the campus is enormous, and popularity means a lot of the talks etc. get full quickly

daughter went to Sheffield with her Mum, wasn’t as impressed

I heard good things about Nottingham too

one of the talks we went to at Lancaster the guy said that “2nd only to the US, UK has the best Universities in the world, so whichever one you choose you won’t go far wrong, choose the one that ‘feels’ right for you”

I went to Manchester Uni (although it was UMIST in those days), and it was very much a student city, with the uni, UMIST, the Poly, and various other institutions. That was back in the '80s, though, and I'm sure one or two things have changed since then!

Lot of nice one's in Scotland. Free too, but that's just boring politics.

My Eldest went to Sheffield Hallam.

Pretty good in all respects. Good education, social life, support, etc. The Uni is fragmented over many sites so can be quite a bit of walking / travelling around.

Also the opportunity for part time work.
This is quite important as my youngest went to Canterbury and the place is so small there is no opportunity for part time jobs / work.
This can have a big impact on the overall costs and Debt that can be accrued.

A key thing is the cost of living and accommodation.
London costs will kill you.

We also looked at Nottingham and it was not to our liking....personal choice.

I'm taking my daughters to see Nottingham Trent on Saturday, Aston on Wednesday & Reading next Saturday!

So I'll give you the opinions from 2 x 17 year old girls if that's any help.

Never went to Uni but Born and bred in Nottingham.

Nottingham Trent has a very good reputation and its a bloody good city. Theres a huge medical campus nr the city also for studants.

Leeds is nice also, Nottingham's a nicer place to eat/drink though and it has Rock City
