you can pull my steering wheel backwards and forwards about a cm on my 69charger. Not sure if the top bearing is the right one.
Also When you remove the steering wheel and fist part of the cover and bearing you can move the shaft in and out. Is this normal?

Any ideas?

the wheel comes off the can

the can needs a specific puller

there is the indicator gubbins and some other thing, possibly some kind of retainer, or maybe thats the base plate to which the indicator cam bolts.....

this is all from memory but it makes sense when you see it

and a circlip. this is key....


the circlip can come out of its grove on the steering shaft which allows the shaft to move up and down through the circlip and the top bearing.

OR (from memory remeber)

the circlip holds the top bearing in to its housing and it is moving up and down with the steering shaft.. one or the other can't remember which

either way the circllip and retainer are key to having a column that stays put. and if the column is in the wrong position you can't see the groove where the circlip should go.

little danger if it moves up and down cos it can't move up enough to dislocate the coupler at the bottom.

but it can impact horn and engagemnet with the cancellor for you blinkers
and may add extra stresses that will break the blinker clicking cam

i dscoevred why mine moved when swapping out the blinker switch due to busted cam


It moves because the coupler down the bottom end at the top of the steering box allows play to cover off flex in the front of the chassis.

Mine is Aussie. i'm 90% sure it will be every similar..... may not be

Thanks, Dave, I have the circlip, but I have seen a photo of a retainer plate that screws in with about 3 screws. I don't have a retainer. Would that cause issues?

Is this not the safety feature when you have a crash

I have never understood it blue new everything about it if I remeber

I will try and post some pics later of my set up. I just want to make sure I have all the right parts.

Think its advisable to have it all correct.

you may or may not have anything missing. might all just be in the wrong order

i seem to rember a plate with screws holding it down

but again mine could be different

There should be no in and out movement, there's a circlip either side of the bearing to stop that. If someone has removed the steering wheel by whacking the centre of the column, that usually unseats one or other circlip.

Thanks for the diagram, the bottom circlip was missing. That has solved the back and forward movement. but there is a bit of side to side on the shaft. I don't have the support 14-96-8 on mine. is that the problem?

wonder why such an important bracket would be missing??

My column is made up from parts, that looks to be the only but missing.
Does anyone have a spare?
Or could I get away with making a hard rubber bushing to slot in the tube

is part 19-46-8 housing, held in place with any screws pins etc. As when the columns all assembled with the clip either side of the top bearing the housing is a bit loose. is this normal?
