Got some tyres for my new wheels today, but I need some help selecting the correct wheel nuts. The wheels are american racing but have been uni-lugged. I took a wheel into a well known wheel specialist but he said the wheel would just flop around on the nut until I told him it needed to be a shanked nut with a flat washer and that they use this type of wheel and nut in the U.S. with no problems. He checked through his book and found some similar nuts but he seemed to be guessing and not certain they were what I needed. So I am hoping you guys can help. Here's some pics of what I've got, the nuts pictured are similar to what I need I think but are the wrong thread.

What you need looks like the nut you show on the left. The nut hex needs to be flat where it contacts the washer ( the one on the right appears to be tapered at that point) The washer needs to be a large enough to cover the slot where the wheel has been unillugged, and the thicker washer you can get the better. You need to check the shank length of the nut by fitting it and the washer to the wheel and making sure it doesn't protrude past the wheels' mounting face, in fact it should be about 1/8" of an inch short to allow for a little washer "crush". Hope this makes sense!

Thanks Blue, the guy in the shop tried selling me a nut with a taper on the hex, so I walked away as I figured I need as much surface area as possible to clamp the wheel. Do you know anywere in the uk where I could get these?

US Automotive is now official an distributor for American Racing, so they should have them on the shelf...if you are stuck to get to the the Nats, you can borrow mine, because hard as I try, the Runner won't be ready in time

Dont forget the thread is 1/2" ( half inch ) UNF , but any wheel suplier should know this . if you have any old coppies of street machine a guy used to advertise in thare selling wheel nuts at a verry resonable price , if i can find the add i will put his number on here . if all else fails i can make you some stainless steel nuts and washers ( not cheap but never rust )

you could try northhants tyres in fleet.

Also if your studs are still left hand thread on the drivers side, dont forget to tell them when you order

after reading this, i decided to check what type of nuts were holding my wheels on, guess what? they were the wrong type for my a.r.e wheels, phoned northants tyre first, explained what i wanted, size etc, told em about the left hand thread busness, the answer was that they do them, but each side is a slightly different sytle, because the they are made by two different companys and they wont speak to each other! then i was told, you can only see one side of the car at a time and the price was ?55 i told her that i am a bike technician and it would have to be matching or it would drive me nuts .
anyway i phoned raceways at donnington and got a matching set with washers for ?49 inc postage and they were here by lunchtine today, cant wait to fit em toodleloo trev
