My Barracuda (/6, auto box) hasn't had an oil change in the 33 years I've owned the car. I've no idea if the oil had been changed at all by the previous owners but I should imagine not as the car was only 13 years old when I bought it.

Do you think it's time for an oil change now? Or does gearbox oil go on forever?

Yes it needs changing. The moving parts wear and all those tiny particles float around in your fluid wearing everything else. You'll need a screen filter too
