My fox body mustang alternator has died, tested it with a multimeter on the battery terminals and it's only putting out 8v, took it to be reconditioned and the guy just looked at it and said he didn't do boat alternators ( is there a difference ).
Tried another place and was told nothing could be done with it, this time though, I was told to replace the internal regulator to solve the problem.

Not being great with auto electrics, does this mean that the alternator internals are ok and the regulator is at fault, so all I need to do is replace it to fix it, or am I likely to waste time and money by changing the regulator?

Need pictures and model of alternator

Most likely its internally regulated. The regulator is just bolted to the back of.

Take it apart clean the brushes have a go

Try and find a regulator for 50p and fit it and see if it works ??

The alternator is internally regulated. Wasn't sure how just replacing the regulator would fix the alternator, unless it's the brushes that are causing the problem of course.
