Front lighting conversion on 68 CHarger

What have you Charger guys done to convert headlamps and turn signals on your Charger please to UK spec.

Generally I have always left the turn signals in place and moved the sidelight operation into the headlamps, but it just occurred to me the headlamp covers won't operate until you switch to dipped beam? Can you modify the switch in any way?

Can't figure out whats best to do...........

Doors are vacuum operated with a specific switch so I would leave well alone in that area.

LED options in the turn signals?

That's where I sort of started and was looking at these clever little LED bulbs- they stay white for sidelights and flash yellow when indicating. Seems to easy !

I used dual colour LED lamps in rear reverse lamps and also in front side lights, work really well. This post from earlier in year.
Glen63 wrote:Back to the original subject, on my 68 Charger I used these lamps on the front without having to modify the side lights or wiring and they work really well.

Also use the same lamps on the rear in the reverse light position, just bought some new lamp holders with dual contacts, added the two extra wires through from the turn signal indicator, disabled the turn feed to the break lights and all works well. So I still have working reverse lights and turn indicators all in one.

When these lamps get feeds to both the white and the amber, they just flash alternately between the two. on indication they just flash amber of course.

The LED are of the new type, so very bright, seems like a nice solution, that involves the least amount of modification from original.

But I have not had the car out in the sunshine yet to see if the rear ones are bright enough, still rebuilding front suspension :(

Cant you somehow link the sidelight circuit into whatever circuit activates the vac when the dipped beam lights come on?? At the moment, I imagine that its linked into the dipped and main beam circuit, may be easy to wire it so that the first click on the switch for side lights activates the vac same as dipped beam??? :read2: :read2:

Slightly different style but same principle to the ones I posted above which come from the USA (they all come from China at some point  ) - Not found anyone that has used them so far so at least your post is encouraging. It seems to be a simple 'plug n go'......

Well that's what I thought - just switch over the headlamp actuators to the sidelight live feed.......... Can't be that hard I would have thought, but it would be nice to know if someone has actually done it........

Just found this article and it looks as though the headlamp switch contains a mechanical vacuum sliding mechanism that only works when the headlight rocker switch is on dipped and main beam I would guess.

My sidelights are in my headlights ( conversion from before I owned it ), doesn't bother me as I never use the sidelights until MOT time. However, I've bought a set of the switchback LED's in your second link, not fitted permanently as yet, but testing seems to suggest they'll work well when I move the sidelight circuit back to its original position. There is a possibility that you'll need an LED flasher relay, they have a zero load and without one your indicators may well flash erratically or not at all. If this is the case it's all down to the relay.

As an alternative, you could drill a hole in the indicator housing and just fit an additional ( LED ) bulb or 2 for use as sidelights.
Or, fit a strip of LED's between the slats of the grille or just behind it ( depending on the look or originality you're after ).

The beauty of modern lighting is the almost limitless choice of what can fit where and still work well

Well these LED bulbs finally arrived from Hong Kong and I plugged them in. The amber LEDs won't flash unless the sidelight LEDs are on. Sort of means you have to have the sidelights on as daytime running lights if you want the turn signals to work

Glen63 you said they just flash amber when you use the turn signals - are you sure, 'cos they don't work that way for me ?

I my have a dodgy connection but thought I would check first......

Yes the ones I have fitted to my Charger work independently. Side lights (white) and indicators amber on there own as well. If side lights on and indicators, they just alternate between white and amber.

Also used them as reverse and indicators and still work well. Some of the guys saw them at the get together at Thunder Road cars in October, as I had a lose connection, so we pulled the lamp out to check.

Test a lamp with a little 9 volt Durcell, you can touch the connectors on quite well just for testing, to see if lamp works as you expect.

OK thanks Adrian, I'll run a couple of checks as you suggest and clean up the contacts and connectors, etc. and see what happens... :thumbright:

I went through this a while ago and this was the solution I found -

The 'switchback' led bulbs are more easily available, but strictly speaking they do not meet the UK regs...

A fair bit of time has now passed since originally asking the question on here, BUT Nathan Shaw of Brightlight Customs asked to borrow one of my front sidelight housings to develop an LED solution. That took a little while and the LED boards are now available from him. Here is the final product fitted to my 68 Charger

That's a good solution.

Glad you got it sorted.
