Never seem to be sure how this should be fitted. Multiple different versions it seems. What is the actual function of the spring on the kickdown rod by the carb and how should it be connected?

fit the spring so that it keeps the kickdown linkage pulled toward the front of the car without it, it may stay back some and cause late shift and bumps on down shifts

It's there to keep the linkage pulled forward against the carb stud by gentle pressure maintaining the adjustment. The reason for the long slot is in case the linkage got stuck all the way back, it would still allow the throttle to close rather than stick wide open which never ends well...

Thank you my transmission friends
I'd seen pics of it as if it were pulling back towards the firewall which didn't seem right on my application. I've also had those late shifts and bumpy changes.
Much appreciated.
