Evening all,

I have taken some Hedman headers off the van due to clearance, I assume they were meant for a car in the first place. No part numbers but definitely Hedman.

I now have the correct ones for a small block van/pickup, they appear to drop lower before going back.

Any way, my question...

I was planning to fit them using the supplied Hedman gaskets only, no instant gasket etc...

However the ones I have taken off have a lot of silicone sealant applied - should I use the same when fitting the new ones?

You need to silicon the bolts, and I would also be inclined to use Silicon on the flanges - Hedman are not top quality and the flanges are quite thin and tend to distort a bit - speaking from personal experience!!!

I'm saddled with wonky flanges by design

and these gaskets work, no sealer need be applied to any gasket face but you might want some on the studs that hit water.

steel shim gasket coated with compressible graphite coating. technology originally used for cast iron super heated steam pipe in powerstations.

still used in industry

and or course automotive gaskets of the 1930s

work well and can be re used 2 or 3 times if you don't clag them with silicone/permatex/hylomar/exhaust paste
