Drum springs

Post by Coupe66 »

Hi All,

I have 11" drums all round on my 68 Charger and they have springs on them. Like an idiot I took one off and cannot get it back on, (need help of another person). can I discard them or do I need to keep them on.

Cheers

depends which ones

you have 2 big to the top anchor
you have a smaller one to the auto adjuster

and you have hold down springs x 2 which hold shoes to back plate.

if these are missing the brake shoes will flare out and ware just 1 side

you need them all....

hold down springs came in 2 types

cone shaped coil spring with a hook washer. fat end of cone sits on brake shoe spine and the cone fits through to nearly the back plate

absolute pig to fit without ruining spring

the other type is a cup washer pin and spring used after 1970 I think

I'd suggest these are better

you need to know how wide your drums/shoes are 2 inch or 2.5 inch

then choose a brake rebuild kit from rockauto from any chrysler car that used cup washer pin and spring set up with the same width of shoe i.e 70s

get Raybestos brand

ebay a drum brake cup washer installation tool. costs about 7 quid

however fords in the UK used same style of brakes. Cortina or sierra rear brakes may throw up what you need in respect to pins and cup washers

duo-servo drum brakes. lockheed wagner girling

if you have cone spring and hook washer back plates just buy a spring and cup washer kit that comes with 4 cup washers per side and use a cup washer behind the back plate to reduce the hole down so the pin head doesn't pull through.

to install the big springs at the top invest in an ebay tool for putting the springs onto kids trampolines

or make one from a battery hold down j bolt through a bit of pipe acting as a T handle

or these pliers

for the smaller spring for the auto adjust I just do them by hand

put it in the shoe and pull it up so you can hook in the end of the wire hook for the auto adjuster

Is this the springs around the drum on the outside? I'd leave them off,I think they were for stopping harmonics, noise from drums.
