Ken,
it could be a knackered lifter. You need to work out if its coming from the top or the bottom of the engine.
It could also be a blow from the exhaust manifold somewhere so you need to establish where the noise is coming from.
If its a sticky lifter, it can be taken out, stripped and cleaned and put back if you are not ready to replace it (which will mean them all).
Try and narrow your serch down and find wout where it is coming from.
Can t see how it would be a valve as if it isnt seating properly you will have the engine coughing and splutterling.
Is the ticking there all the time from cold start, or only when its warm, or only on tickover etc. etc.?
