it could be a knackered lifter. You need to work out if its coming from the top or the bottom of the engine.

It could also be a blow from the exhaust manifold somewhere so you need to establish where the noise is coming from.

If its a sticky lifter, it can be taken out, stripped and cleaned and put back if you are not ready to replace it (which will mean them all).

Try and narrow your serch down and find wout where it is coming from.

Can t see how it would be a valve as if it isnt seating properly you will have the engine coughing and splutterling.

Is the ticking there all the time from cold start, or only when its warm, or only on tickover etc. etc.?

I had a ticking lifter and could hear it on the move. It went away after a while......Get yer stethoscope on it

Far more likely to be the exhaust gasket,
has it got headers? they blow gaskets out all the time and it sounds like a duff lifter

My bet is on exhaust gaskets too. I used copper ones from Summit to great effect, following advice on the board a while back

Agreed, exhaust gasket before anything else.

when i did my headgaskets along with "header gaskets" my tapping noise dissapeared go for the exhaust gaskets

i had the same, it was exhaust gaskets, used the percys dead soft aluminium ones, seems to have worked

i read somewhere you cannot (legally) use copper for car exhaust, something to do with toxic gasses produced , would that go for gaskets too i wonder

I dunno about that, the ones I got were 50 state legal, so if CA allows them I wouldn't have thought there would have been a problem (?)

Hope not,I picked up a pair for my headers and a pair for the collectors in the States At that price they are going on legal or not!!

From my recent experience it could be lifter or exhaust. I suspect if its lifter you could track it to some extent by using a piece of hose asa rough stethascope on the manifolds to trace a lifter. Having also had blown mainifold gaskets i swear they sound like doom but are really easy to cure!
