Hi all,

So my new car has finally arrived (pics soon), but I'm not sure what to do next...

The car arrived and cleared customs, I have paid the VAT due already (through my agent) and I have been issued with a C88 form and a E2 form confirming all the customs gibbins is kosher and paid etc. The car has been released to me and I have it all tucked away at home.

Now I need a NOVA to register the car, no?

No one can tell me how to get one and the HMRC online NOVA system does not allow private individuals to use it for cars from outside the EU.

What's next? Is it automatic? Am I going to receive a NOVA in the post in a week's time? If I have to apply, then how?

If I've already paid the tax etc, why would I need to make a separate NOVA declaration?

It's all very confusing and NO ONE at HMRC or the shipping company can give me an answer...

Last 2 paragraphs. You should be notified,your importer should have done the NOVA already,check with them.

Unless I have misunderstood, those last 2 paras seem to reference acting on behalf of a VAT registered business, not an individual.

My shipping company claim they have nothing to do with the NOVA process and never have.

To be clear, customs have already reviewed all the docs (route 3) and calculated the tax due, and I have paid it.

Most shipping companies normally complete the nova process as part of the shipping procedure, usually all you have to do is get the car mot'd , insured on the vin number and then send the registration form off ( you can get this from the dvla website it's called an 'import pack for a used car' ) which shippers did you use ?

Agreed if it cleared customs all duties should be paid Mot the car get insurance fill out the registration form send it off and wait 2 weeks.

check your e mails tom ,I got mine like that and printed it off for registering,but was arranged through my shipper as they paid the tax,,ask skippy ,he will know more as he done my shipping

I've imported 2 cars, both times the shippers dealt with all Nova paperwork. Thats two different shippers , Schumacher and Hill.

Same here, Ron at STS Imports did all the paperwork prior to the car arriving.

Hill shipping did all my paperwork prior to collecting the car from Southampton.

I have imported several cars over the years , the last being the Cougar that I still have , and to the best of my knowledge I didn't, and never have filled in a NOVA form, it has always been down to the shipper. I last dealt with Hill Shipping who were great from the moment they picked up the car to when I collected from Felixstowe, like the others have said this one is down to your shipper , unless things have changed in the last couple of years.

After a lot of searching online I did eventually find this:

" Note (ii) Non - EU imports by private individuals and non-VAT registered businesses
No notification of any kind is required to be submitted by this group of customers. However, the information provided on other HMRC forms as part of the import process (which was not changed by NOVA) will be used by HMRC staff to make an entry for the vehicle onto the NOVA system. Once all checks have been completed by HMRC a letter will be sent confirming this. It is therefore important that private individuals and non-VAT registered businesses provide the necessary import information (for example C88 plus C384, C104A etc.) to the National Clearance Hub (NCH)."
