Bands and Tranny ID - help ....

Hi all,
So with reverse seeming to slip/disappear on me, I topped-up fluid a tad (about 300ml) and decided I would give her a drive around the block to test.
Well, didn't go well as by the time I had got it out the barn, reverse was almost non-existent, only possible at extremely low revs on no competing incline. Once engaged and travelling, she will go backwards.
So it now appears as Mr Bishop has said that the band/s will need tightening.
It's a 340 3-speed, so I assume (possible wrongly) that it's a 727 Torqueflight - is it ?
Could it be another transmission ? just asking as I will need to order up a new gasket for the sump - sadly, she sits quite low and as yet I don't have ramps, so not able to get a good view.
I shall have ramps next week which I'm borrowing off a mate, but I can always send a gasket back if it's wrong.
Anyone here carry gaskets for these boxes ?
While on the subject, the manual says that the lock-nut has to be torqued - can I just "snugg it up" as no torque wrenches on hand - if need be, I shall purchase some.
Are there any special tools needed?
Manual sounds self-explanatory, drain, open, tighten band, new gasket, close, refill and done - any pitfalls ?
I'm good with my hands but not a trained mechanic.
thanks

Pretty sure Alders transmissions do 727 parts. Check trans first but I thought 340s all came with 727 in E and B shapes

Get a torque wrench. You'll need it again and again. Good investment

It will either be a 727 or a 904, different gasket, same filter which you might as well change while you're in there. If when you drain the oil, it is any other colour than red and clear it's game over. You will need a square socket and an inch/lb rather than the usual ft/lb torque wrench to correctly adjust the band, with the right tools it's pretty easily done. Now then, the other thing that would cause those symptoms is the seals on the rear servo, you can replace these in situ but it's a lot more involved.

It is possible to adjust the bands without torquing. Slacken locknut, tighten adjuster until drum is just locked, slacken back until it can just be turned by hand and then a further half turn back and tighten locknut.

Sussex Autoparts stock all the parts

I'm assuming with this approach, my rear wheels are on jacks (front on ramps) so that I can manually turn the propshaft to ascertain correct tightness - or just leave rear wheels down and put in Neutral ?
yeah ?

fluid on the stick is bright, clear red and no burnt smell - thankfully.
Once shes's on ramps n jacks, how will I know ? Is it as simple as the numbers on the housing will contain 727 or 904, then I know ?
Obviously, if I have both gaskets then I can ascertain based on whichever fits I guess.
I'm hoping the bands at this junction - don't really fancy "opening" something that I cannot close the same day !!

The shape of the pan will tell you. To be safe if you order from Sussex Autoparts just buy one filter and both gaskets they are very cheap.

I am ordering the gaskets today but have also just noticed something in the manual this morning -
It says to measure and top up ATF at hot/running temp but in NEUTRAL ....
I did it in PARK and as a result only needed 300ml - does being in PARK make such a difference to the fluid level that low fluid could still be the problem ?
I guess I'll check regardless before doing the reverse band ...
