What Causes Excessive Brake Dust?

I've noticed recently my front wheels are covered in thick black soot from the front brakes. Didn't use to be this bad, and I haven't had the pads changed recently as they were fine on last inspection.

Would a different pad reduce the amount of dust produced? If so which pads are best? Is there a rotor/pad combination that would be better than stock?

Others may disagree but I think you're stuck with it. The only alternative pad I can think of would be for race applications and they don't work well from stone cold. I believe all pads have a lot of metal in them these days which is what causes the dust.

Agree with Blue, cheap pads often produce a lot of dust but check you dont have binding brakes and check discs. Or you could try ceramic pads.
