Replacement drums

Been looking at some replacement drums for the front brakes on my Polara. The ones on it have the bearing carrier built into the drum but the replacements I have found on the net all seem to have just a plain drum like the ones on the back brakes.

Anyone able to explain this please? Cant get my head round how a front drum without the seat for the taper bearing in it would work. There are some that are clearly being sold as fronts for my 68 Polara but really aren't anything like the ones on her.

Got me scratching my head now :read2: :read2:

Are you sure the hub doesn't press off the drum? They usually do and can be a very close fit.

Yes,should be press on,but bank on some new studs as it often wipes the threads.

What size are the drums Steve? I have two good 11" drums off the Road Runner here. I think the shoes were 3" wide.

Thanks Mick....I believe my fronts are 11 x 3 with the friction surface of the shoe being 2 3/4" and my rears are 11 x 2 3/4" with the friction surface of the shoe being 2 1/2". I will check for sure tomw but sounds like they may be just the job!! :thumbright: :thumbright:

Many of the front drums were clamped tightly to the hubs by swaging over the wheel studs as part of the production process. These studs will not press out without causing damage to the holes in the hub.

The swaged area of the stud will have to be cut out first. One way of doing this is to use a hole saw that will just fit over the stud thread, and a drill press.

Thanks Matt. That description combined with actually having a good look at it a couple of days ago when we replaced the wheel cylinder....it all makes perfect sense now!

Thanks for all your help and I will send you a PM re the drums you have Mick,
