Carter BBD manual

this is for the late model TIN top carb (after 1972

not the low top (through lid accelerator pump version)

but not much difference when it comes to how to set float height

http://c803310.r10.cf2.rackcdn.com/bbd_ ... manual.pdf

in fact loads a manuals once you mess with the URL in google aha-aa

http://www.carburetor-parts.com/Free-Ca ... p_274.html

or here for another BBD

http://u225.torque.net/cars/SL6/docs/BBD_Manuals.pdf

then you need a 1971 or 1972 service manual to cover off the LA based 360 with a carter BBD

http://www.mymopar.com/index.php?pid=109

this will list your float height

Still having problems with my carb, basically it's very lean at idle & very light throttle, I have to have the mixture screws screwed most way out to get a reasonable ish idle & the spark plugs are white. The float height is correct & cstripped & cleaned the carb & also checked for air leaks whilst idling... sprayed carb cleaner around joints & manifold carb spindles etc but can't find anything. Timing is set slightly advanced. Any ideas anyone ?

hi shaun. firstly I must say. im no expert on your merky carb issue, but firstly screwing mixture screws out this far wont help. most petrol engines work on the same principal. the correct air fuel mixture . good timing. valves and ignition. and correct spark plugs. . so then you must consider has your motor been tuned or standard. has it a sports exhaust. usually if the latter two sugestions have been done. then you would need to up jet your carb. or change it for an uprated item. I would not drive your car if you don't sort out the white plugs or you could detonate a piston or two. also at tickover the main jet isn't being used. a pilot jet is what ticks your car over. id be more inclined to check your timing. and remember a carburettor is a precision instrument and must be correctly adjusted to make any engine run nice. sorry im not much help. but it may help you work out your engine running issues. reggie

Might pay to check the accelerator pump plunger, these suffer wear and give a very lean symptom on pick up.

Thanks for replies. The accelerator pump is working fine as there is no hesitation when accelerating or putting your foot down. The problem is only at idle speed or when gently coming off tick over. I'm beginning to wonder if it's got the correct carb fitted as it's never been right since I've owned it. There is an ID tag on the carb with some numbers stamped on it. Where could I find what number carb should be fitted ? It's got a carter 2 barrel on it at the min it has got a twin stainless exhaust system fitted with standard exhaust manifolds. Thanks shaun
