is there a way of checking if a lifter is collasping ,,got a ticking sound coming from engine ,going to retighten the header bolts to eliminate the exhaust ..
this is after the head gasket went and the noise is coming from that side

I'd suspect the header gasket Dave, seeing as it's been changed/disturbed. Sounds just like a lifter. If not, it's off with the rockers and check for too much pushrods movement.
Hopefully gasket issue.

As Miles says....if you rule out header gasket then you can run the motor with the rocker box off if you do not mind too much oil splashing about...

Actually, some years back I had two recent lifters collapse. It was pretty obvious what was wrong. I just put a screwdriver against the inlet manifold and you could hear the rattle. Exhaust gasket won't do that.
