I want to beef up the noise on my 73 318 engine. It already has twin pipes, but is still a bit quiet. I had Flowmasters on my Buick and they sounded great, but they're very expensive.
Are there any other mufflers which sound similar, which i could get over here that don't cost the earth?

Mate of mine makes mufflers and might be able to help, give Matt a call on 07977 827522 and see what he has to say.

Thrush do a Flowmaster style muffler, lot cheaper than Flowmasters, normally some for sale on UK Ebay

Always used to use Sonic turbo mufflers, they were cheap, sounded good & readily available, don't know if they still are?

Rob i remember everyone around here had those - they sounded great didn't they. They stopped making them over 20 years ago but n.o.s ones occasionally pop up on us eBay.
Those Thrush look like a straight Flowmaster rip off.

In the late '70's round here we just used to bolt a pair of Thrush header mufflers to the end of the collectors and leave it at that, now they were loud! You can just about see them here under the doors.

When I first got mine it only had a single Cherry bomb each side exiting just in front of the wheels, stupid loud and horrible to pull away in, I fitted a small silencer in front of each cherry and it transformed the car.
I know what you mean about those Thrush mufflers Blue I thought Flowmaster when I saw them.

Nah just get a pair straight through pipes with cherry bombs at rear, job done long live the 70's

You're welcome - the first time I came round your house in Peterborough I was around 10 - I'm 40 in April

I have a pair of Thrush flowmaster type boxes on my car.
They are very loud, great for waking up neighbours and would soon annoy anyone if they lived close.

Yes I am still on the Cherry Bomb stage too,my Van,Jeep and Monte have them on as the only silencing. The Monte has them quite near the front of the system and it has a lovely deep bass to it.
I will concede though that the Fury has Flowmaster style boxes and that has a delightfully mellifluous sound.

I fitted a pair of Thrush Welded to mine. £50-odd a side. Discrete enough around town, yet sounds healthy when opened up. Seem to be lasting okay, too.
Static: (Merc's not mine, haha, was just testing it)
