What is this for? (oil filter mount)

Does anyone know what the purpose of the square headed bolt is on the oil filter mount?

I'm looking for a location to put another sender into the oil system and this looks like an easy place, but I just want to make sure sure there's nothing important behind there.

I think that it's just the plug for the machined hole, what sensor did you want to fit?

Thanks. I want to put an oil temp sender in for a gauge. I'm using the Autometer one which is reasonably long.

As long as there is oil moving past that plug it should work. I just wanted to make sure there wasn't any valves or springs hidden in there before I undo it and fubar the whole thing!

That is the main oil feed from the filter to the engine so if you fit something in there make sure it's not causing an obstruction. IMO an oil temp gauge sender should be in the oil pan as it's that temp you're interested in isn't it?

Thanks Blue. A sump plug adapter was a thought but I already have loads of fitting adapters and thought I might be able to utilise this 'spare' port.

If that port is the main feed, I might have to get the sump adapter, those autometer senders are really long.

Any idea where I can get a 1/2-20 unf sump gauge adapter bolt??

Best way imho, is to have a proper 1/2" npt boss welded in place in the oil pan.

That's what I'd do.
