Hi chaps,
Are the ring and pinions stamped according to which axle ceasing they belong to,because am I right in thinking they are not interchangeable.

I do not think they are stamped.

The 489 is easy to spot as the pinion is tapered.

The 742 is parallel.

Not sure about a 741 - you are best googling them for measurements....

My 489 is actually stamped 3.23. Don't think my previous gears had a stamp, though.

741 is the smallest pinion 1 1/4 or 1 3/8 iirc, 742 is 1 3/4, both straight & as the wise man said 489 is the tapered one & also he strongest. Some gear sets have the ratio stamped on them, but for many you'll need to count the teeth.
