Hi chaps, due to install new power steering pump and need to know what fluid to use.
Not using Dexron as it's incorrect and damages seals. What UK based product will suit?

I'd always thought Dextron was correct.
Where did you learn that it damages seals Miles?

I've put Redline Power Steering Fluid in mine after I replaced the original hoses. Used to top up with Comma PS & ATF fluid previously.

No difference in feel or anything.......Not that I expected that it would be. :thumbright:

I think the big difference between PS fluid and ATF is trans fluid has detergents and friction modifiers.

I believe one of the original issues is that because of these detergents it tends to eat through hose rubber and seals.
Never seen it personally and as these cars have all been through the 10-15 year old beater stage, that they would all have been run on fairy liquid and soap at some point (unless you have a cherished example).

Still runs and drives.........
In all honesty I'd guess that as none of these cars are doing 15-20k Per annum or on the original hoses, that it makes very little difference.

Sorry for delay guys, I'm in Spain!
Ok, what Dave81 said is what I've read.
When I bought the car it had a new steering box and Dextron fluid. The box is stil nice and tight bit the seals are leaking, and leaked fairly early too.
I'm fitting a new power steering pump and intend to use 'proper' power steering fluid. Some off the yank sites refer to Mopar power steering fluid, but I can't seem to find what designation that is.

internet says

mopar power steering fluid +4

Convenient, easy-to-pour, pint-sized container. Meets Chrysler material specification for post 1998 Chrysler power steering systems that require MS-9602 fluid. Compatible with ATF+4.

no i'm none the wiser either

but autozone says

Power steering fluid such as Mopar Power Steering Fluid (Part Number 4318055) or equivalent should be used. Only petroleum fluids formulated for minimum effect on the rubber hoses should be added. Do not use automatic transaxle fluid.

so i'd suggest the +4 stuff is like ATF for use in late cars

and there must be a prior formulation without the + 4 which is being refered to by autozone below

i'd suggest that anything called Power steering fluid would be the one to use as without any extras in the title its probably petroleum based
check back for caveats and "get out of court scott free when it all goes wrong" small print

MMmm

what's this "power steering" you talk of anyway....? sounds like heaven
