50 today- - Happy birthday Dartastic. All the paperwork says 6 december 67, but when i took the door cards of last year they are stamped 8 dec 67. Anyway, whichever date, congrats to the old girl, she's fairing better than i am.

So was the 68 shape, as in round marker lights etc, available in 67? Was there a release of the new cars near to the end of the preceding year? I don’t know when my Dart was made exactly as I have no build sheet... but a few badges etc. are 67 type... guessing there was some intermingling of parts across the overlap. Where door cards stamped on the day of assembly?

As far as i know any car built after their summer hols (Sept-Dec) became the next years production model, so Dec 67 became a 68 production model. The 67 and 69 had rectangular side lights. Don't know about the door cards.

Our '63' Dodge has a production date of Sept 10th 1962, so was an early 1963 model. The date stamped on the underside of the original front seat covers is July 30th & 31st, so a bit older than the rest of the car!

To the best of my knowledge, and what I tell DVLA every time I write a decode letter, the Mopar "model year" started in August the previous year.
There are plenty of cars I have seen with a build date on the door or fender tag which will be the year before the "model year".
Therefore a car built in Aug 67 will be a 68 model year car generally.
The good thing in the UK is that the model year ties in with our registration letter system as they started on 1st August from 1967 onwards.

As an aside this means that E reg cars (1967) were only registered from Jan to August 1967 as prior to 1967 the new numbers came out on Jan 1st and ran to Dec 31st. F reg is therefore August 67 to July 1968.
It was changed to assist the motor industry sales, as summer time was a flat time for sales, but new letters prompt more sales.

Thanks Matt, makes sense now... on a side note, would you know how much of a faf is it to try to get a reg from DVLA changed to something with less characters? Not after anything special but hate having to squeeze so many characters onto a US plate.

That is not as easy as changing to age related. I suspect you would probably need to buy a "cherished" plate with fewer numbers from their list and get it transferred.

Thanks Matt, can you put any cherished plate on an older car then? Do they have no inherent age to the plate? Sorry questions, questions!

You can't put a plate with a newer age prefix on an older car.

That I know Blue... but do cherished plates have an age prefix as such?
