Low Comp (1978) 318.
Holley 600 4bbl, Eddy Intake, Dougs Headers into true duals.
Eventually a 3.55 SG rear end running 26" high tyre (2.76 at the mo).

Been looking at real steel they offer two options.

Competition cams 260
260/260 212/212 .440

Or Competition cams 268.
268/268 218/218 .454

Above with all the bits is circa £500.
(Cam, Springs, Caps, Collects, Seals, Pushrods and Cloyes Timin Chain)

Open to other reccomendations as in reality i dont wish to sink too much into this block.

Do i need all on the list above. (Think i have lifter noise on the drivers side hence me looking at replacement - Plus i want more Goooo).

Probably not got enough compression for those cams, have a look at the Hughes whiplash which Is designed for low compression late model engines.

For a stock low comp 318 I reckon Blue’s is a good call. Lots of good feedback on the Whiplash. An alternative is the Comp XE262 which I ran in a 318, really nice, torquey cm, no silly high lift, works well with stock converter. Some suggest that the Hughes cam. With high lifts can be attritional on rocker gear.
I have the XE268 in my 340, but that has aftermarket heads and higher comp pistons. Might be a bit much for your car as it definitely has some lump at idle in my motor.

I've just imported a Hughes cam kit for my dart.
As I am no longer going the stroker route, I don't need the comp cams xe268 cam kit I imported .
If you are going for that cam kit, I'm sure I could sell it to you a lot cheaper than you importing one.
It's brand new, never opened to box.
They do work very well in a low comp 318, nasty idle, but to get the best they like more compression I think.

Dave, I thought Howard cams had moved on , off this mortal coil so to speak. Think he devised the Voodoo range that you’ve missed off the list.
Note that the Hughes cam just recommends their $700 rocker kit to go with their cam
XE262 is a safe bet.
Johnny’s XE 268 would be good, but really for a 340;360. I can’t be arsed to try and post vids on here but if you Pm me I’ll post you a Vid of my 268 in my 340. Quite lumpy.

Would love too, but from all the reading i've been doing the 268 really needs above 9.1 comp. Mine would be closer to 8.1.

If you wouldnt mind telling me which cam did you go for from Hughes?
Was it the Premium Cam kit or the Cam, Lifter and Spring Kit?

in my hemi 6 250 Lb/inch double spring

I used offset steel retainers from comp cams, 7* for steel, to fit in the springs, limited space, and multifit collets
they have mopar sized outside diameter and any inside diameter or config to fit with your valves.

i expected a motor that went well from about 2500 rpm
and it does....

it was doughy in the 800-1500 rpm range until i stuck webers on.

To make this cam work in my motor, i had to get a static CR of 10.5:1, and get my dizzy mechanical advance reduced to run 10 initial and 28 total.
originally my dizzy made 34* total with 6 initial i.e it added 28 * measured at the balancer. too much.

I tend to run V power but other than cost it goes well.
The cam grinder said it would be quite horrible if i left the static CR at its previous standard 9.5:1 which actually turned out to be about 8:1.

becasue i got lots of general advice pointing me in the correct direction, But also a wide range of views on how to achieve a nice running engine, that came mainly from people who knew lots about v8s. Or knew lots about 2 litre 4 cylinders. I felt i had to be careful as neither group were dealing with a motor that had a rod ratio like mine.

That was a worry, so......

and then used the software at the bottom of the explanation to check i got more or less the same as outcome as the wallaceracing online calculator
a few abortive attempts when i got a few numbers wrong and all was well.

that way based on my rod length bore stroke and static CR i could get a cam that landed me towards the top end of the range between a Dynamic CR of 7.5 and 8.5

and what i found was most all of the advice given generally landed me in that area anyway but now i had a better understanding of why

It was nice to check.

if my DCR had been higher like 10:1 i would have built a pinging grenade
if it had been low like 4 or 5 to one i'd have built an expensive slug.

both advice and software served me well and helped me to avoid making a motor that was less useful than the one i pulled out.

i.e what i'm saying is put the standard oem spec for you motor into the software and start sticking in cams (the downloaded app was easier to use in this respect, use online tools to work out necessary cam specs from what you have if need be)
till you find one that sits you at 8 DCR

thats yer cam...... or its one of them, as there are a number of ways to skin a cat and indeed shape the torque curve.

and it will most likely fit with what blue and howards and hughes say.

I did what Dave did, albeit without his understanding of science, I then picked the cam ‘in the middle’ of the available options and she runs great.
For comparison, when I first got my car it had a big lift, big duration Mopar Purple cam matched to a stock 1600 rpm converter. Car wouldn’t even idle and was a dog. Correct cam/cnvertor sorted it.

It is unfortunately very expensive compared to the comp cams EX268 cam,lifter,and springs kit
