Ok anorak question, Now we have moved I need to get the front drive and garden cemented over (or maybe Tarmac). It will be more use to us for lots of classic car parking
My question is we have had a quote of £4500 to do it, have you guys had much cement work done? is this a good price.
What are your opinions between cement and tarmac? any advice is welcome guys. The size is about15ftx41ft

Tarmac can get soft in a hot summer and isn't too good with petrol and oil.

Definitely concrete. Cleaner, lighter, stronger, impervious to anything that might leak out of a car. Just bear in mind it takes a few days to go off before you go parking on it!
As for cost, no idea sorry.

get a few quotes, been throught all of this, as said tarmac is a no no if working on cars, watch your axle stand sink on a nice summers day.

I went for printed concrete, looks real fancy and no maintence other than than resealing it every few years

Just make sure they dig out for a good base as prep is everything, My RV weighs over 15 ton and the concrete hasnt cracked or sunk

I echo what’s been said. I’ve had both concrete , and printed concrete. The later looks better , and stands up well to oil etc.
Cost will be more , but as said get a few quotes. I’m sure prices vary massively throughout the country!!!

You got about 60 m2 there to get covered. Concrete you need about 12m3 which is about a grand but its all the other stuff like reducing the ground level, putting down a proper sub base, edging, drainage, expansion joints, labour and plant, etc. You need to know what you're getting for £4500 to be able to make a comparison really.

Thanks for the info, yes he is doing new edging blocks to define the edge of road and to define new path edge too. Also supplying new water main cover, digging out and removing soil and laying concrete with a brushed finish. The quote doesn't say what base he is putting down thou should I ask?

Before you do anything check with your local council. Solid concrete is a no no these days, they will want to see a permeable surface laid. Don't put it down and end up with an enforcement order to take it up again. I'd go for a proper sub base and permeable block paving.

Thanks for the heads up, we live in a private road and I have phoned the local council and been given the all clear

See if they will give you that in writing.

I was about to say the same as Latil. My parents need to do a drive at their place and have been told they can't concrete it, its to do with water run off I think.

I am going to get it in writing if i can before we start. I didn't know this would be hard work getting someone reputable to do it either.

Ahhh concrete.
Depends on the mix, where you get it from and quantity.
Breedon would deliver to you most likely but thats only good to you if you are going to DIY it.
You'll want a good sub base of compacted type1 which is frost resistant and as you won't want a huge raft with a 2ft lip, you'll need to dig out the ground to make it good. Also steel work will need adding, or fibre then with cut joints for expansion.
Shuttering needs to be done property and I'm guessing it just a drive, 150mm would be fine. Think long term - do you ever want to build on this area?
