'Scratching' sound from rear axle.

Talk about vague - but new axle (which i am not happy with) seems to be making a 'scratching' sound - imaging a wheel was rubbing - (so regular and speed related) but more of a metallic 'scratch' noise.
Axle is suspect as thats the new bit and I am not convinced its quite right anyway - tight turns seem to 'crab' a bit so I am wondering if the diff is borked. Locks up ok (e.g. burnout) but not convinced its all good.

Anything obvious to check before I start ripping it out and getting it to the docs ?

I would have thought back to the suppliers for a discussion...

Could be something loose in the brake drum or a brake drum rubbing the back plate perhaps.

Thanks boys. Yeah, I told you it was high level.
Supplier :-) Nah - its a long ago private buy.
Brake drum suggestion I like. It does sound like a ratcheting/scratching sound on a regular cycle. I'll try applying the handbrake a little when driving and then pop the drums off see if anything looks like its turning into a lathe... :)

Broken return spring will do that,if it's dropped down and rubbing the drum.

or indeed the backs of the Bananarama! the handbrake strut due to the shoe retaining springs allowing the shoes to bow outwards.

I know this cos.....

mine did that

i replaced the 60s style cone springs and square based hook type retainers with post 73 pin spring and twist retainer set up

that sorted it.

get the shoe fitting kit for your width of shoe Rockauto

the new main brake springs were exceedingly stiff and pulled my shoes 1/4 inch off the back plate mid shoe, just enough to move the handbrake strut out by a smidge so the wheel stud heads knocked the cross strut .

early retaining springs were just R U B B I S H and a PIG to fit

i used spare twist retainers on the outside of the back plate to stop the pings pulling through the massive holes used by the cone spring square based spring hooks

OK sports fans - problem gone.
So used the car sat morn to try and diagnose - same noise - ratcheting/scraping noise in line with speed. Called friend and arranged to go down and get it on the ramps have a look. Set off for garage - noise gone completely. Cruised around for a bit - nada.
Currently running on the theory that either whatever was scraping twanged back into place or maybe it was a bit of muck/grit or something stuck in there (I had a little pebble stuck under the muck-guard on a front brake disk once and the noise was fearful).

So - I dont have the cure - but whatever it was has gone for now. :-k
Thanks for the replies.
