Dash Voltage Limiter Replacement

now ive got some time/dough to devote to my dart ive been meaning to replace the limiter as fuel/temp both work but consistently under-read
have dropped column, disconnected cluster plugs and jimmied the cluster out ... old limiter was flush into back of cluster panel and once it was out there appeared to be a short wire sharing the centre pin leading to what looks like a small cap (think this is radio noise suppressor according to google)
however even though new limiter pins are identical in length to old, limiter wont sit all way in, either with or without this extra wire
how hard should i press on it, or should it go in easy, dont want to break any connections
