After some advice please regarding my 1978 Plymouth Fury ref Tax & MOT...

It's 40 years old now this year and the MOT ran out 25th July 2018 and the Tax expires end of this month (August 2018).


Will I be driving it illegally now with no MOT or is it automatically exempt from MOT and what do I need to do ref the Tax at the end of this month?


Sorry if I seem stupid asking this, but it's my first ever Yank/classic so not fully sure of the rules...

I Believe it can all be done online now. If the tax runs out this month, the online tax form wont show any charges, you still need to have it taxed, but it just wont cost you anything. If i recall the same .gov website also allows you to declare it MOT exempt. Will take a few days to update, but the .gov online car check will show now MOT information, but it will show as green.

Much of the explanations online are not at all clear on the relationship between the car being exempt, and the need to declare it as such.

Although this paragraph I've found on the Classic Cars website pretty much answers the question :

<<If the MoT for a vehicle more than 40 years old expires before its next taxation anniversary, the DVLA computer and therefore the police will recognise it as MoT exempt until the taxation date. If the owner declares it as a VHI at that point, it will continue to be exempt. If the owner doesn't, it will require an MoT test before being driven on the road.>>
