hi all, would like a bit of advice, regarding the lifters on my 383 engine, when i start the engine up ,from cold,on the left hand side of the engine,i can hear a bit of noise, which sounds like its coming from the lifters, after the engine has ran for a short while, all sounds good,if i take them out with a magnet, would there be any thing that i could check for wear? hoping that its not going to be a camshaft lobe, thanks, mick

Are you sure it's lifters and not an exhaust blow.

hi derek,no its not a exhaust blow,as i had a slight water leak ,on the same side, could not see where it was coming from,so i removed the exhaust manifold, and found out it was the core plug, which is in the cylinder head.the exhaust gasket looked ok,

If it was a cam lobe it normally would not get quieter when warmed up - if you sure its not exhaust manifold gasket it could be a hydraulic lifter??

Sorry - one more, then i shut up ! Only because i have been there. I thought lifter issue but these exhausts are a devil - esp if running headers.
The tiniest blow sounds EXACTLY like tappitty noise - it drove me nuts.
I only urge you to triple check as its a lot easier than mechanical surgery.
G’luck !

thanks for the reply,s.had the core plugs and the exhaust gaskets, delivered today, going to work on it in the morning,i get what you mean, about the exhaust blowing, hoping it will be the problem.going to check the exhaust manifold,to see if its gone out of shape as well.

fitted both core plugs,in the side of the cylinder head, cleaned up the face of the exhaust manifold, put a straight edge over it,found out that there is a high spot on the manifold,in the middle of it,which would cause the problem .going to get the exhaust manifold skimmed,at the engine shop, will get it back in a few days,so hopefully this will be the problem, thanks again
