Never seen one of those before, part of an aftermarket cruise control or something like that?

Pretty sure this is stock blue,
Both my Dart and duster have them.????????
On a side note what’s the best oil to use down the cable, I was thinking something like 3 in 1 .

Maybe its something for use in cold climates then

3in1, ATF any light oil used sparingly isn't going to hurt.

given that the mtor is earthed by the earth strap and the speedo drive is plastic its unlikely to be an earth
suggest if there is something in the device that spins with the cable that this is for cruise control or emissions control
i presume something is switched on when the cable spins and is off when it doesn't
either magnetic pulse/tone ring or a centrifugal switch... for a car that wasn't base model
did your car have ELB originally? was it made for california use?
either way if that's original it probably quite a rare part
spin it in a drill and see if you get AC v (small like 0.5-3 v) off it with a multi meter....

Did a bit of research and apparently it’s a centrifugal speed switch that is part of the smog system, it provides a ground when the vehicle reaches 40 mph.
Part no 3438494.
So your both right chaps.
Cheers .

ooh you could put that to use in a ecu controlled car
use it to open up your electronic header valve at 40 mph or some such, extend a variable length ram tube or blow flames out the tail pipes
cut ignition for 2 seconds charge up coil and plug attached to tail pipe and then switch on ignition again wuuumphf

out the back
Nice

Your an encyclopaedia of info Dave,

But to be honest I would chuck it in the bin if I had a one piece cable.

Lives on the bulkhead, yes?
Have one in my Demon. You will have a two piece speedo cable. Very hard to get.
You can bypass the lot and fit a one piece if you wish.
On a dart they used these to put the front marker lights on when you were exceeding a certain speed (think it was either 70 or 80mph) "You;'re not being eco friendly - slow down".

Mine is bolted to the drivers inner wing, it’s in good nick so it will go back on.
I also have one on the Dart as well but didn’t know that about bringing the marker lights, will check it out.
Cheers.
