anyone used a carpet dye please?

need a dark brown or black but no idea how much i would need ?

Sounds mad but we have had great success with Wickes fence paint, water based. Just re-did Mandies velour truck seat from grey to black, and we used brown fence paint on a set of cream dining room chairs. Vastly cheaper than fabric dye and works well for us. £10 for 5 litres. We tried it in an obscure area first but its great. Did a fabric IKEA sofa with it too.

... and if you can get old fashioned proper creosote, it smells really nice too

seriously, i have some i may just give it a go

i jest you not, water based fence paint, no creosote smell, stains if you get it in the wrong place but you can put it on with a big brush and cover well in about 2 or 3 coats.

heres the results

I jet washed the carpet, used cleaner etc etc but the years of oil and general staining were too much.......... as you can see

thats 1 coat, and it has a really nice 70's brown look to it

Agreed - that is random ! But its only silly if it doesnt work... (thats my rule anyway)

Pete can vouch for our dining room chairs, they were done with the same stuff and it doesn't come off on your jeans.

done 3rd coat, and it looks like it should be that colour...so


Matt, how long did yours take to dry?

We just did Mandie's bench seat and it took a long time for the first coat to dry, probably over a day. Clearly nylon based velour does not have the absorption properties of wooden sheds and fences!
It did dry and doesn't rub off when you touch it. I think the fact it was so cold made the drying time longer.

Our view was, it was worth a try for the cost of the paint at £10 ish and if it went wrong we could still get another seat.
