Hi Pete, gave up on the PM. Looking any background info on the Dart 340 engine. Who built it, has it been rebored, sure it has a aftermarket cam. Issue is, I can hear a knock on start up. Not all the time, but enough to worry me. Once oil pressure goes above 20PSI it has gone and she drives great. Will know more next weekend when I take her down to Ian's place. But Ian is a Chevy man, doesn't really like working on mopar engines. I think you owned her at one time. Originally a 383. Has an extra set of spring perches 3 inches in from the origionals. I believe she was raced at one time. Just want to know if anyone has any info on it before we tear it down. Hope all's well.

Is the noise top end or bottom end on start up?

What oil are you running?

Oil changed last year. Valvoline VR1 20/50. Looks clean to me. thanks for replying, possibly selling her later in the year, but wouldn't do it to a member without her being right. heading down to the garage now. May be a job for DaveB, Everything else is looking great except for the engine. Does need a clean up at the least.All best, Gerry

Do you have a mechanical oil pressure gauge on the car?

If not, it may be worth temporarily installing one on the back of the block and see what you get cranking / Fire up / idiling / fast idle.

It sounds like bearing wear to me, but it may be a (clutching at straws) sticking oil pressure relief valve...

Just an outside thought, my big end knock was a broken flex plate. I could actually see the crack once access cover removed from underneath.
May not be the case with yours, but worth a look. I only discovered it after I had the bottom end apart.

Gerry, if the flasher is buggering about, get an electronic one from MOSS.
They are cheaper now than when i fitted mine, and don't use bimetallic strips to break the current, just electronics so teh flash rate is always steady. They were £20 a go, now listed at £10.
