Well a pic of the diff or some casting numbers would help Joe! The good news is that they are easy to fix.

Did you have any oil in it by the way?

just had a quick look, nope there wasnt much oil in there. it has leaked most of it all over one of the brake shoes and all over the inside of my wheel and arch, nice! topped it up is slightly quieter but still sounds bad at 30-35mph and and whines at 40-45mph, would a inbalanced prop shaft do much damage??

An out of balance prop wil end up joining you in the passenger compartment where you can inspect it yourself!. Out of balance will sound like a drumming noise increasing as the road speed increases. If you suspect it is out of balance, don't chase Porsches on your way home to check it, DrogOBand!

I've just had the same problem.
It is the inner seal in the axle.
Take your brake drum off and there will be oil everywhere.
Take all the brake hardware off , unbolt the half shaft pull it out with a slide hammer, just inside the axle tube you will see the inner seal measure the distance in then pull the old seal out and tap a new one in the same distance, clean everything down and either buy new shoes or brake clean the old ones and put back together you will also need to reset the end float on the axle

yeah i found that out, n/s brakes are covered in oil. just got some new seals though so hopefully that will cure it. the diff still has a whine at 40 mph but should last a few more miles.
