Hi, advice needed by a new member and new owner of a California import 68 Dart 270 hardtop (318 cu in).
I was advised to run it on unleaded (2 star)with a lead replacement additive. It seemed to be pinking on this so have filled up on lead replacement petrol (4 star) again with the additive. Does this sound OK.

By the way the car is fitted with the standard 2 barrel carb.

Cheers guys.

Peter, i have run an in-line lead supplement for the past couple of years with no trouble at all. there is also one that you put into the fuel tank and forget about.

I have heard bad things about using lead replacement fuels so have avoided it. Our charger can pink for England some days depending on how it feels but we have found that using the Super Unleadeds tend to reduce the chances of it. I have used three different fuel additives and all seem to be pretty good, so worth experimenting with, we have used Powerpour from Webster Racing, Some supplement from Millers Oils from the local car accessory shop and lastly used one from Prolong that again seemed to do the job. Best results come from mixing with top quality (price) fuels!
Derek I have been looking at the Broquet in-line thingy - which are you using and any negative points to watch out for?

I would expect a 318 to run on 2-star OK. Unless someone fitted high compression pistons or something? If it is a 1968 318 it will only have 9:1 compression which shouldn't be any bother at all.

I wouldn't bother with the lead either. Not unless you do a high mileage.

I was told it was a very bad idea to mix LRP with additives

Thanks for the replys.
The additive that I have put in is called Valvemaster from Castrol. I think I might try it with super unleaded next and see how I get on. I think I might persevere with the additive but try a different brand as the above which was bought in Halfords is only available there in fairly small bottles so quite expensive.

Do you know how to set total timing and if so what do you have it set at?

The answer would have to be not to both.

Cool car, Pete. Welcome aboard from a fellow A-Boder! I run unleaded with Castrol Valvemaster for nipping to the shops. I run Unleaded with Castrol Valvemaster Plus (Octane booster version) for going to the track fully loaded. Then I run Optimax plus Valvemaster plus 106 Octane Booster. I reckon yer timings cock-a-hoot. Could be the vacuum advance as well. Get it checked out.

for the past 3 years ive run the duster ( 273ci)on regular unleaded , no aditives before that i ran a 318ci van for 5 years a 360ci van for 3 years and a 318ci pickup for 3 years , all without aditives and with no problems. i did mix a bit of aviation fuel (120 octain) to the 360 for a laugh , definately recomend it for performance but not easy to get hold of unless you have an airoplane (or microlite in the garage you need to run up to check engine :D ). if you intend to keep the car and use it as a daily driver why not get hardened valve seats fitted , problem solved.
