I seem to remember a master spline on my RR, although it was 5 years ago so could be wrong.

No doubt you checked that so i'm wrong

Hmm, it's been a good while since I last fitted a pitman arm but I seem to remember there being more than one "master" spline on the box, if that's the case then the lock to lock and halve it method is good enough to work out which spline to use.

With 4 masters it can only go on in one place then

Only if you have centred the box first, otherwise the arm will physically fit the box in any one of 4 positions but only one of them will be correct to line up with the drag link.

(I seem to recall just one on mine - but it was in the car so if there were others maybe they just weren't an option?)

I've just done my box and pitman arm and there was four master splines, all i did was lock to lock and halve it.
