A way around a problem

Due to the lack of response to my wanted and having no luck looking at US co's repops I decided to diy the job.
One plaster of paris mould using the glued together original nylon job as the pattern, one old Villiers mower carb and some practice runs. I've made a new gear in mazak. Now tell me who makes the new ones
When your key turns and nothing happens, just after fitting that £20K engine and box it's likely that this thing broke. If you can't get a new one what happens?

Kev,Will,on a tilt column the lock barrel turns this gear thingy which pulls a rack gear that pulls a rod that operates the ignition switch on the side of the column. The last tooth broke off mine so I couldn't get lights on the dash or starter. It's all better now

Sweet! Nice backyard engineering. (Shame about the Villiers mower carb, they go for bundles on Ebag!

Deliberate pun huh

I think Zenith made the Villiers carbs
Will wot carb do you need then? I've got a couple of good ones and part of one that looks like a shiny blob of melted zinc

thats a cool bit of work, as ive always said we can all find a way round a problem if we try. why not make a couple with the mould and sell them on

New mould every time, its only plaster. Have to coat the nylon with vaseline so it releases from the mould. That was my fourth attempt as the vaseline kept gassing and blowing the gear teeth.

Excellent, never tried casting anything before but wouldn't mind having a go. Whats the procedure to get the metal molten?

I think it will depend heavily on the material you use John. Obviously we are going to be talking metal in general, but stronger, higher melting point metals may cause difficulty as you may not be able to generate enough heat at home. We caould be talking about a spoon full of lead over your gas stove right up to steel foundry and everything in between.
Steves response whould be interesting.

Excellent effort Latil, that's the sort of daft thing I would do...and in this case it looks like it's going to work!
