As mentioned in a previous episode......Steering this Charger must be like trying to steer the QE2 down Sevenoaks High St.

I've noticed that there is a lot of free play in the steering column shaft as it enters the box.

Is this an MOT failure?

And will tightening the steering box itself sort this problem?

I WILL get this car stopping and steering. (With all you expert help of course)

From memory you are allowed 3" of play at the steering wheel and still pass the test. Adjusting the box can help but with the wheels jacked up off the ground make sure you don't end up with any tight spots turning the wheel from lock to lock, you've overadjusted it if you have.

Only if you do it as per the manual.

Also don't forget that the engine should be running when testing the play in the power steering box (but not the steering joints).

Halfords haven't got one.

Definitely 3" of play at the steering wheel.
Also check for any up and down/side to side play in the steering column itself and any cracks in the steering wheel. these are all MOT failures.

Lastly try ebay in the states....folk are often selling their second hand manuals after they sell their cars.

Cracks in steering wheel; From the testers manual
Reasons for rejection.
Steering wheel weakened by cracks or fractures,in a condition that hampers proper control or likely to injure the drivers hands.
NOTE:Cracks or incompleteness of the covering skin of a steering wheel or hub,are not a reason for rejection.

I just mentioned the cracks because I had a car fail on that once. I didn't think at the time that they were likely to weaken the strength or rigidity of the wheel, and it certainly never hurt my hands....but thats when you start getting into subjective issues and it is down to the vagaries of the tester.....
Best to find a good, fair MOT tester, and stick with 'em...
