why is my 727 tranny blowing out fluid?

just got back from americana at newark, (510 mile round trip and first motorway journey/big drive) and on the way home the tranny started blowing fluid from the front seal (all over my exhaust creating loads of blue smoke  ). it has had a drip or two from the bell housing for a while, but it was pouring out until it it gets 1/4 inch below the min mark then stops leaking, i made a few stops on the way home topping up the trans and it kept doing this untill it finds this level, the trouble is that the level makes the gearshifts all out of sync/norm, the fluid is not burnt and the tranny works fine with the correct oil level :?
sounds like it needs to come out, but i want to take it to the nats as it coped with the journey easily
any ideas, or can it be fixed in place?

You cannot get to the front seal without removing the torque converter. I would be tempted to pull out the whole pump from the front of the trans and check it out.

Either way you will have to either drop the trans or remove the engine. Dropping the trans is easier of course but if you need the engine out for some other reason....

Are you sure it is not leaking from the stupid dip stick tube?

My leakage at Shakey was caused by the convertor snout having splits in each side

Very good point Alex. That would explain it.

it is being thrown everywhere off of the torque convertor, could also be coming out of the breather

It is no big deal to drop the box and bang a new front seal in if that is all it is.

box is out, was going to have a go at it myself(strip and inspect0but being so close to my first nats i thought i`d bite the bullet and get it done properly, so now it`s up in duncan`s for a freshen-up, so hopefully everything will be o.k.
