Would putting the wheels on the ground and moving the steering around a bit not help??

It might do but there is two problems with that.

1. i have no steering.

2. i have no wheels.

I have no idea what you are trying to do but I would stop until you know how to do it, no bottom ball joint should need hitting or pressing for it to fit

Are we not talking about upper ball joints? :?

If it's the top one, you need a special socket to screw it in, 'tis fiddly and you can wreck the thread in the A-arm (If it's not already wrecked taking the old one out!). You are better off doing this job with the A-arm still bolted to the car.

Even so,you still don't press in or whack in any of them.

He is in serious trouble if he don't know the difference between an upper control arm and a lower one.

Well if it is the right size it should just fit though and tighten the nut to the correct torque. Job done.

You could always check the torque again later after it has driven a bit.
