the last few months i have been driving my car (67 cuda 273) i noticed it was using oil and puffing a bit of blue smoke at high revs mostly out of the nearside exhaust. the last week or so it seems to be pouring out smoke under hard acceleration and puffing it out at idle and low revs. i have changed the oil and checked all the breathers, the pcv valve works fine. i noticed if i take off the pcv valve oil smoke poures out of the rocker cover and it still burns oil out of the exhaust. does this sound like worn rings?

Could be worn valve guides or missing seals. Do a compresssion test and then do the oil trick to see if the readings go up.

Sounds like either worn cylinders or just the rings Joe. It might even be a broken ring if it seems to be just one cylinder.

When I had a broken ring it was like a smoke screen coming outta the breathers. Mind you, it was both rings.

what is the oil trick? i done a compression test the left hand bank (the smokey side) was between 130-140 psi, the right bank was between 123-135 psi. does this sound about right?

if they are all about the same I'd say it's ok. Put some oil down the bores and repeat the compression test. If the readings are a lot higher your rings are worn.

When doing a comp test make sure you jam the throttle wide open. Some people forget that and get lower readings than they should.

Also dont put in too much oil down the spark plug holes as it is possible to either hydralic the engine or most likely to fill your compression tester full of oil you(been there done that

) . If unsure of the amount of oil leave out the comp tester spin the engine (a bit messy)so that it blows out the excess oil then refit the tester .
