Next door neighbour recently purchased a pickup (for those at the Ace a couple of weeks ago the light blue 'stodgey motors' one)
Anyway - it would appear to have a 318 and 3 speed auto - first question does 948-2 C on the casing decode as anything (it has 14 bolts on the sump pan if its of any use) and secondly what oil does it need. (couldnt find anything else worthwhile as a P/N)
Its currently leaking outside my garage and we would like to fix this over the weekend looks like a new sump gasket (well... I hope thats all)
p.s. anyone know where the block numbers are on a 318

Block numbers are cast into the side of the block, last 3 numbers are engine size, i.e 123456-318-4 the 4 is not worthy of note unless you want a race block, it is the number of cores used to make the mould, Hardcore racers want less than 3..

The trans will most likely be a 904. Put any trans fluid you like in it. The numbers for it are stamped in the edge just above the pan on the left side. The shape of the pan will tell you if it is a 904 or 727. But most likely it is a 904. I have a drawing somewhere showing the difference.

The leak could also be coming from the seal around the selector shaft or from the input shaft seal in the bellhousing so check those too.

Unless it is a newer mopar of course! I forget some people buy cars made after 1974!!!!!

A-500 is based on the 904 and the A-518 is like a small block 727.

When you've got the pan off make sure to dress all the bolt holes flat. Don't over tighten the pan bolts and have some nuts and bolts handy for the holes with mullered threads!!

Have suggested to my neighbour that this is probably best as I dont fancy another box build! Getting mine sorted is bad enough
