What is ths engine??

Someone in the far east has contacted me regarding this engine, he needs some settings etc as he is struggling for info.

Now it sort of looks like a B/RB block but the water pump is fitted to the heads and the engine mounting points are very different etc.

It is a marinised engine but I would be suprised if they cast a block just for boat applications??

Who knows what it is?? clues include it has solid lifters, dizzy at front (notice tach drive)

You sure is is a Chrysler engine at all? Rolls Royce maybe?

Rolls engines have rear mount dizzy's...

Sorry for that

I pointed "Thierry from Laos" over here - as he contacted me through another board I mod on.
The engine has supposedly been rebuilt - revs cleanly without any load, but wont pull on load and prop in the water.
I had also been told that it had hyraulic lifters?
Something also to note - the engine recenty had the carbs changed - unkown CFM though....

If a Chrysler I'd guess at a 50's small block - they were a tighter angle than the usual fare, weren't they?

I thought I had seen Rolls Royce engines with a dizzy at the front? It might be my strange mind playing tricks but I seem to remember thinking "that looks like it was based on a 383".

What is on the i.d. plate on the side of the sump?

Hmm, never seen anything like that before, it sort of looks like a big block Chrysler but there are so many things that are different I don't reckon Mopar made it....

I'm thinking it might be a tall deck AMC, they have front mounted distributors and I think the post-69 ones have them canted over like that. If its a boat motor could it not be a Mercury Marine or something?

I did a search on Chrysler Marine and industrial engines and couldn't find anything that looked like that! I did discover that 440 marine engines have solid lifters and steel cranks, the damper on our mystery engine looks like a cast crank damper.

That water pump looks very much like the one that came on my 413, that attached to the heads, the heads have blanking plates on the rear end. Matt Snowball has the pump now, I gave it to him at the Nats maybe he could compare it with this one.

unfortunately that water pump housing went to the scrapman - what a large & strange piece of cast iron it was ! (but thanks for the pump etc ) Cheers,

well I was nearly right! But one question does come to mind, does that mean that the water pump Matt sold the scrap man for about 28p is in fact an extremely rare piece that a military vehicle restorer would have paid about ?5000 for?

See Matt never get rid of anything before you have checked it out properly that pump could have been your deposit on a Hemi.
